Taking a Holistic Approach to an AF Lifestyle
Share
Life is Stressful. Have a drink.
Life is a Celebration. Have a drink!
Life is Social. Have a drink.
Life is Hard. Have a drink!
Does this sound familiar? Our society is saturated with messages that endorse alcohol as the solution to every problem, the essence of every celebration, and the social lubricant for every gathering. This societal pressure to drink is so prevalent that it's even found in unexpected places, like the time I attended a PTA meeting where alcohol was served in abundance. This pressure can be a significant obstacle for those striving for an AF lifestyle, but remember, you're not alone in this struggle. Many others are on the same journey.
Embarking on a journey towards a holistic, healthy lifestyle, which involves understanding your relationship with alcohol, is a path filled with hope and inspiration. This understanding is crucial for making the healthy shift you desire and not succumbing to societal pressures. Some of the more common underlying reasons people drink are:
- The need to reduce stress.
- The need to relax.
- The need to cope with unresolved pain, whether that is physical, emotional, or mental.
- The need to manage social anxiety.
- The need to let go of control and have fun.
- The need for connection and inclusion with others.
Suppose alcohol is helping a person fulfill these basic human social and emotional necessities. In that case, it will be hard to let go of the desire to use alcohol until a person discovers other ways to meet their needs. Once someone becomes self-aware about how their relationship with alcohol is meeting their needs, we can begin to examine alternative ways of getting their needs met. Discovering healthy ways to relax and let go, reduce stress, manage anxiety, find fulfilling connections with others, and address the pain a person carries is an essential part of the journey to sustaining a successful AF lifestyle.
Remember, this journey can be challenging. There may be times when you feel tempted to revert to old habits, and that's okay. What's important is that you keep moving forward, learning from each experience, and staying committed to your wellness goals. Learning healthy strategies and developing new skills that can support you in reaching your wellness goals is worth it because you are worth it! So, I’d like to make a different kind of toast. I’d like to toast you and your journey to becoming the most healthy, vibrant person you can be! You got this.
In abundant health,
